The Evolution of Type, Project by Andreas Scheiger

The Evolution of Type 53

The Evolution of Type is an ongoing exhibition by Andreas Scheiger, Here is how he introduces his project “When my eyes crossed this excerpt of famous type designer Frederic W. Goudy´s “The Alphabet and Elements of Lettering” (1918) suddenly letters full of life showed in my mind´s eye. Letters are organisms and typefaces are the species, all classified similar to biological taxonomy! I drafted this cognition in a chart for print and in order to prove my finding to the interested audience I took one step further. I surgically opened the letters S, Z, S, A, W and how contented I was to discover muscles, veins, tendons and bone just like the ones shared by so many living creatures.”

Amazing Intarsia Creations by T.A.G Smith (User Submission)

T.A.G Smith (9)

T.A.G Smith is a 22 year old intarsia artist from Nottingham who recreates photos in wood. Intarsia is a technique that uses pieces of wood of different shape, size and species which are fitted together to create something similar to a mosaic with an illusion of depth. After the different woods are selected for the pattern, each individual piece is cut, shaped and finished. Areas of the pattern can be raised or lowered to create more depth. Once finished the pieces are then fitted together like a jigsaw and glued onto a backer. Tom also takes commissions from people who want me to recreate a photo of their pets. As well as the intarsia Tom makes quirky boxes and small chests of drawers which have no joints.

Sculptures by Calvin Ma

Feature

Calvin Ma is a sculptor based in San Francisco, Calvin explains his work well on his website; “ My work taps into this childlike sense of exploration, but is focused on a personal issue. Social anxiety reared its way into my life during adolescence and still lingers today. Byproducts of this debilitating issue include: avoidance of unfamiliar social interactions, heightened nervousness in the company of strangers, crowds, peers and intermittently among friends and family. I use art to encompass and reference the experiences developed through these symptoms in order to realize the origins of my problem and eventually overcome it.”
