Noriyuki Saitoh’s bamboo insects are intricately crafted using bamboo and although each mini-sculpture is created to the same scale as the real-life insect, he exaggerates well-known features. Noriyuki explains that as a lot of detail in insects can’t be seen by the human eye he thins out certain elements which in turn leaves plenty of room for the imagination.
Insects I create are never real. Since we are not preparing specimens and replicas, we strictly measure the dimensions and prioritize the appearance impressions, features, and senses rather than proportions being created exactly.
People’s eyes appreciate small works. We compensate gaps and colors of genuine and works with knowledge, experience, and imagination. I think that it is fun to appreciate this bamboo work.
